LED Bathroom Mirror Buying Guide: Anti-Fog, Colour Temperature, and What to Check Before You Order

Standard bathroom lighting comes from overhead, which is exactly the wrong direction. Light from above casts shadows down your face — under the eyes, under the nose, along the jaw — which is why shaving and makeup are harder in a bathroom than anywhere else in the house.

An LED mirror fixes this by putting the light source at face level, on the same plane as your reflection. That single change does more for a bathroom's daily usability than most renovations. Here is what to sort out before you buy.

One thing to settle first: these mirrors are hardwired

Our LED mirrors require a hardwired electrical connection. There is no plug.

This is not a drawback — hardwiring is cleaner, safer in a wet room, and leaves no cord running down the wall. But it does mean you need either an existing junction box behind the mirror location or an electrician to run one. In Quebec and across Canada, bathroom electrical work should be done by a licensed electrician, and bathroom circuits require GFCI protection.

Sort this out before you order. It is the single most common reason a mirror sits in its box for three weeks.

Sizing to your vanity

The mirror should relate to the vanity, not the wall:

• Width — aim for roughly 70 to 80 percent of the vanity width. A 36-inch vanity pairs well with a mirror around 26 to 30 inches wide. Never wider than the vanity itself.

• Height placement — the bottom edge typically sits 5 to 10 inches above the countertop or backsplash, with the centre of the mirror at roughly eye level for the household.

• Orientation — most of our models mount either horizontally or vertically, so a narrow mirror can run tall in a tight space. Confirm on the product page for the specific model.

For double vanities, two separate mirrors usually work better than one wide one: each user gets light directly in front of them rather than off to the side.

Lighting quality: the part that actually matters

Front-lit vs. backlit. Backlit mirrors emit light from behind the glass, producing a soft halo around the edges. It looks excellent and works well as ambient lighting, but it is not ideal as your only task light. Front-lit designs put illumination on your face, which is what you want for grooming. Some people install a backlit mirror and keep the overhead fixture for detail work — a perfectly reasonable combination, as long as it is a deliberate choice.

Colour temperature. Some of our models support three settings: cool, neutral, and warm. This is more useful than it sounds. Cool light is closer to daylight and better for makeup that needs to read correctly outdoors. Warm light is more flattering and easier on the eyes at night. Being able to switch means one mirror serves a 7 a.m. routine and an 11 p.m. one.

Dimming. All of our LED mirrors include touch dimming, which matters more than people anticipate — full brightness at 6 a.m. in winter is genuinely unpleasant.

Anti-fog is not optional

A mirror that fogs after every shower is a mirror you cannot use when you most need it. Our mirrors include built-in defogging pads that heat the glass surface and keep it clear.

Anti-fog performance still depends on your bathroom's ventilation. A defogger works with an exhaust fan, not instead of one.

Lifespan and what to expect

The LED chips are rated for over 50,000 hours, which works out to roughly 10 to 15 years of normal household use. Brightness stays consistent over that period rather than degrading the way traditional bulbs do, and there is nothing to replace along the way.

To get the full life out of it: skip harsh or ammonia-based cleaners, wipe with a soft cloth and a mild glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than the mirror, and keep moisture away from the edges and the touch controls.
