Planning a Bathroom Upgrade in Montreal: LED Mirrors, Shower Panels, Freestanding Tubs and Whirlpools

A bathroom is the smallest room in the house, and somehow the one that causes the most arguments. Tile colour, tub style, how bright the mirror should be, whether you actually need those body jets. If you're planning a renovation in Montreal or anywhere in Quebec, here are the decisions that matter most.

Start with how you use the room

Before browsing products, ask yourself a few honest questions. Is this a quick-shower room for a busy household, or a place where someone wants to soak for an hour on Sunday? How many people use it at the same time every morning? Do you have a condo with weight and noise rules, or a house with more freedom? The answers filter out half the options.

LED bathroom mirrors: it's about the light

An LED bathroom mirror isn't just a mirror with a glow. The quality of the light changes how you see your face, and that's important for shaving and makeup.

•  Colour temperature. Warm light is around 3000K, neutral is roughly 4000K, and cool is 6000K. Many mirrors let you switch between them, which is handy.

•  Colour rendering. A high CRI, ideally above 90, shows colours more accurately.

•  Anti-fog. A built-in defogger saves wiping the mirror after every shower.

•  Dimming and touch controls. Check where the controls sit and whether they work with wet hands.

•  Safety rating. Bathrooms are damp, so look for an appropriate ingress protection rating and relevant electrical certification for Canada.

Also check how it's powered. A hardwired mirror needs electrical work; a plug-in model is easier to install but needs a nearby outlet.

Shower panels: simple, if the plumbing agrees

A shower panel is a wall-mounted unit that combines a shower head, handheld shower, body jets, and sometimes a thermostat in one column. They're popular because they give a spa feel without a full tile-and-valve renovation.

Water pressure matters. Body jets and rain showers need decent pressure and flow, and in older buildings that can be a problem. Check the minimum pressure the panel needs, and where the connections go. A thermostatic valve helps keep the temperature steady when someone flushes a toilet or turns on a tap elsewhere.

Don't forget cleaning. Jets with lots of small nozzles can collect limescale—find out how easy they are to descale.

Freestanding bathtubs: beautiful, and heavier than they look

A freestanding bathtub is the showpiece of a bathroom. It sits away from the wall, usually with a floor-mounted or wall-mounted faucet. The look is hard to beat, but there are practical points.

Material is the first choice. Acrylic is lighter, warm to the touch, and easier to install. Stone resin looks solid and holds heat well, but is heavy. Cast iron is very durable and also very heavy.

Weight matters because a full tub with a person in it can be extremely heavy. In a condo or an upper floor, check the structure and, if needed, speak to an engineer or the building's management.

Size also matters. Measure the room, the door, and the path the tub has to take to get inside. A beautiful tub that can't get through the door is a classic renovation story.

Whirlpool bathtubs: more complex, more rewarding

A whirlpool bathtub, with water jets, is a different animal from a regular tub. It needs a pump, plumbing, and an electrical supply, usually with ground-fault protection and sometimes a dedicated circuit. It also needs an access panel so the pump can be serviced later.

Think about noise, too. Some pumps are quiet, others are not, and this matters if the bathroom shares a wall with a bedroom.

Maintenance is part of the deal. Whirlpool plumbing can collect residue, so you need to run cleaning cycles regularly. Check what's recommended.

If you live in a condo in Montreal, read the building rules first. Some buildings limit alterations or require approval for plumbing and electrical changes.

Smart coffee tables: the odd one out

You might not think a coffee table belongs in a bathroom article, but it's a growing category in home furnishing. Smart coffee tables can include features like wireless charging, built-in lighting, hidden storage, or a small fridge. If you're considering one, check the quality of the electronics, the safety certification, the build, and how the table behaves when you spill a drink on it.

Winter, humidity and Quebec realities

Quebec winters are dry, and bathrooms are full of steam. Good ventilation is essential to prevent mould, regardless of what products you pick. Also consider the cold. A freestanding tub in an uninsulated corner will lose heat faster, and floors can be chilly. Heated floors are a popular addition for a reason.

Get specifications in writing—dimensions, weight, power requirements, and certifications. Check warranty terms and who handles repairs. Confirm how replacement parts are supplied. Plan installation with a licensed plumber and electrician where required. Look at real photos and reviews, not just rendered images. A supplier who answers questions about installation and maintenance without fuss tells you more about the product than any marketing brochure.
